Why do I need an EPR Number?

An EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) number is essential for businesses that sell packaged goods, particularly in markets where environmental compliance is strictly enforced. It ensures that companies take responsibility for the environmental impact of their packaging throughout its entire lifecycle—including disposal and recycling.

1. Legal Compliance

Many countries—especially in the European Union (e.g., Germany, France, Spain)—require producers, importers, or sellers to register under an EPR scheme. Without this registration:

  • You may be legally prohibited from selling products in those countries.

  • You could face fines or penalties for non-compliance.

2. Tracking & Accountability

Your EPR number links your business to the amount and type of packaging you introduce to the market. Authorities use it to:

  • Track your packaging waste obligations.

  • Ensure you are contributing to the cost of collection, recycling, and disposal.

3. Marketplace Requirements

Major online platforms like Amazon, eBay, and others now require a valid EPR number for certain countries (especially Germany, France, and Spain).

  • Without one, your product listings may be suspended or removed.

  • You must upload your EPR number to your seller account to continue operating.

4. Sustainability & Brand Image

Having an EPR number shows you are committed to responsible, sustainable business practices.

  • It builds consumer trust and aligns with growing demand for eco-conscious brands.

  • It can also enhance your relationships with retail partners and suppliers.
