EPR - Spanish Digital Cetificate

EPR - Spanish Digital Cetificate

Overview

The FNMT Digital Certificate for a Natural Person is an electronic certification issued by the FNMT-RCM linking the subscriber with data of verification of signature and confirms their identity. This certificate is a digital file containing the user's identification data.

What is a Digital Certificate?

A digital certificate in Spain is an official, government-issued electronic ID (often called a Certificado Digital or Firma Digital).

  • It proves the identity of a person or company online.

  • It allows you to sign documents electronically with full legal validity.

  • It’s issued by the Spanish National Mint and Stamp Factory (FNMT – Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre) or other accredited providers.

Why is it needed for EPR?

Under Spanish EPR laws (for packaging, electronics, batteries, etc.), producers and importers must:

  • Register in the official producer registers.

  • Submit periodic reports and declarations of products placed on the Spanish market.

  • Communicate with government portals and compliance schemes (SCRAPs).

👉 To do this, the company (or its legal representative) must log in and sign forms electronically using a digital certificate. Without it, you can’t complete the registration or compliance filings.

Who needs it?

  1. Spanish companies → use their company’s NIF + digital certificate
  1. Foreign companies → if they sell directly into Spain, they may need to:
Appoint an authorized representative in Spain, who uses their digital certificate. Or, in some cases, obtain their own digital certificate linked to their Spanish tax registration.
