Translations - What are the requirements when translating ingredient information on my product labels?

Overview

In this guide, we will explain the translation requirements, for displaying ingredient information across your product labels.

What are the requirements when translating ingredient information on my product labels?

For products sold in the EU, nutrition information must follow the requirements of the Food Information to Consumers Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.

This means nutrition values must always be shown per 100 g (or per 100 ml for liquids).
Please Note: There is no requirement to display percentages of ingredients within the nutrition table. Nutrition information must be declared in the standard format per 100 g / 100 ml.

What must be translated on the product labels?

When selling in different countries, the following typically require translation and are mandatory to translate:
  • Product name
  • Ingredient list
  • Allergen information
  • Nutrition table
  • Storage instructions (e.g. “keep refrigerated”)
  • Usage instructions (if applicable)
  • Net quantity
Important Notes

Important note on ingredients

Ingredients themselves do not change, but:

  • Ingredient names may need to be translated into the local language
  • Additives often have standard names or E-numbers that must be used correctly
  • Allergens must be clearly translated and highlighted every time
